One School's Efforts to Promote Education in Gaalkacyo PDF Print

Hormar Primary School in Gaalkacyo is taking the initiative to encourage parents from the area to educate their children.

In February, the school invited parents to talk to them about the benefits of sending their children to school and supporting the ones who are already in school in order for them to continue learning.

The school is among the seven working with CISP under the EGEP project which aims at increasing enrolment of school-age children particularly girls from disadvantaged families, and supporting them to complete school.

The school is also working at improving its facilities as a way of creating a positive environment for pupils.  As part of the school development plan, the school has hired new teachers.

Ahmed Jama, the regional educational officer thanked the school, religious leaders, teachers, and others who were present. He specifically commended the parents for their commitment to ensuring their children stay in school.  “Keeping children at home leads to poverty. As a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher. When parents and families are involved in their children's education, the children do better and have better feelings about going to school,” he advised.
