Vocational Training Giving Hope to Youth in Gaalkacyo PDF Print

Gaalkacyo - Before Abdisalan enrolled for masonry classes, he had no income and would spend his days loitering in the streets of Gaalkacyo.

With the support of the Elmidoon project, CISP and the Ministry of Education in Galmudug enrolled 40 unemployed young men in training courses in the construction sector.  Most of the training is done on the job; in December 30 of the trainees started working and getting a small stipend.

Abdisalan was one of them:“I am learning a skill and at the same time earning a living for my family. I have gained basic skills in plastering and tiles. Now I don’t have to worry because as long as people are constructing buildings my colleagues and I will have something to provide for our families.”

In just two months, he is showing dedication and potential in the skill. He is currently earning about $180 a month. It is a quick turnaround for Abdisalan, the other trainees, as well as the families they support with the money they earn.

As security in Gaalkacyo town improves, the demand for quality construction services has grown. The sector has been identified as one of the major potential employment field for youth.
