Amplifying Young Voices for Meaningful Engagement

Protection

January 24, 2025 Mogadishu

In celebration of the International Day of Education and its theme, Learning for Lasting Peace, we spotlight the transformative impact of the Boys and Girls Networks (BGN), established under the WW2 project implemented byCISP and funded by FCDO.

These child-friendly spaces are designed to amplify young voices, empowering children to engage in meaningful discussions about critical issues affecting their lives through the WW2 Project: Empowered Communities, Including Boys and Girls, to Fight Against VAW and VAC In and Around Schools.

BGN provides a platform for boys and girls aged 12–15 to participate in empowerment activities, fostering their ability to cascade valuable lessons to their peers both within their schools and in their communities. The networks operate separately for boys and girls to create safe spaces for open dialogue, growth, and learning.

Central to BGN is the understanding of children’s rights and responsibilities. Mohamed, a participant from Mohamud Mire School, shared, “Knowing my rights helps me stand up for myself and my friends.” Such discussions are not only empowering but also instill a sense of accountability among peers.

Amran, another member, reflected on her personal growth through the network: “Before I joined, I was shy. Now, I can express my thoughts clearly.” This focus on building self-confidence equips children to take ownership of their narratives and speak up on issues that matter to them.

One key topic discussed is the protection of children from abuse. “We need to talk about bullying and how it affects us. It’s important to speak up,” said a boy during a network session. Such open conversations are crucial in fostering a safer school environment and addressing harmful social norms that perpetuate violence and inequality.

The networks also emphasize the importance of peer-to-peer education. A girl remarked, “I tell my friends about the things we discuss, so we can all be stronger together.” By sharing their knowledge within their communities, these children amplify the impact of their learnings, promoting change that goes beyond the classroom.

The WW2 Project  through the Boys and Girls Networks are creating a generation of informed, confident, and engaged young advocates. By empowering children to voice their concerns, advocate for their rights, and challenge societal norms, these initiatives are laying the groundwork for a community where children's rights are ensured, and every child can grow in a safe and protected environment.
