Impact of Water in Schools in Galgadud region

Education

March 17, 2022 Galmudug

“I am comfortable staying in school longer since we got these water tanks. Before I used to go to our house which is far from school. I would walk about half a kilometer and it took me 30 minutes to go and come back. I used to miss a lot of lessons every day, but now I am are very pleased to get these facilities in the school,” said Rahmo Isse Awale, a 13-year old student at Moalim Ibrahim School in Guriel.

CISP successfully installed 10 PVC tanks in 9 schools in Galgadud region under the SHF Somalia-funded project. This enabled schools to store water for 1724 learners (boys 985, 739 girls).

The 9 schools in Abudwak, Xerale, Guriel, Adado and Dhusamareb districts had no clean water, but now receive monthly water trucking enabling them to store water for 1724 learners.

The availability of water in the schools addresses challenges of low attendance as students now have access to safe drinking water while in school. It also improves retention of learners during school days as attested by attendance records.

The 9 target schools were selected by the Galmudug Ministry of Education pointing that they are the most vulnerable to water shortages.
