Mentorship and Networking for young Somali writers and artists

Culture and Heritage

August 18, 2021 Mogadishu
"The mentorship and networking events changed a lot in my life. My ambitions are now higher. This training made me feel that I am important and my digital storytelling team is important too. We have come together and formed our own group to produce stories that will make a change. I want to make more progress in digital story telling" said Fuad Kahlif, a digital storytelling workshop and mentorship participant.

Between 31st July and 2nd August 2021, CISP Somalia in partnership with the Somalia Academy of Sciences and Arts (SOMASA) held partnership, mentorship and networking sessions for participants of the earlier concluded digital storytelling and creative writing workshops. The purpose of the 3-day event was to inspire and mentor creative youth under the EU funded ArtXchange project.

The event brought together experienced professionals, writers and companies in various media organizations and publications to share their knowledge and opportunities for creative youth in their various organizations.

"I was happy to see my fellow storytellers and catch up with them. I was also able to learn from veteran and experienced storytellers. They told us about very useful tools and about the history of Somali media and storytelling. I learned that people’s perceptions about things can be skillfully changed towards the positive. I also learned if you want to tell serious stories you have to base it on the context and the environment of the people so they can understand it. This was really the kind of mentorship I was looking for, now I know where to look for inspiration and who to consult with” said Amal, a participant of the creative writing workshop as well as the partnership, mentorship and networking event in Mogadishu.
