Education

April 27, 2021 Galmudug

Fartun Mohamed is a single mother of 6 children. She is from the host community and lives in October village in Abudwaq district in Galgagud region. She is among 30 trainees who completed a 6-month course in tailoring. She never got the chance to educate herself and this is the first time she has an opportunity to learn a skill.

“I joined this course in September and I gained a lot of knowledge about tailoring. I learned to sew using a sewing machine. I have a little shop at home and I am sure that after this training I will be able to sew for my children when their clothes get torn, but, I will also work for other people who want sewing on their clothes, ”said Fartun.

The purpose of the skills training is to help participants engage in decent employment activities and other life skills such as self-management, adaptation to evolving economic environment in Somalia, creative thinking, problem-solving, and understanding the business environment.

"I believe that when individuals are equipped with skills, they become entrepreneurs, employable, and informed citizens thereby contributing to the economic development of a nation," said the TVET manager.

Olad Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) center is the only public center currently operating in Galmudug Abudwaq District. It was constructed by CISP in April 2017. under the ELENA project funded by the EU.

A total of 202 youth trainees from disadvantaged IDPs, Returnees, and Vulnerable Host Communities graduated from Olad IBTEVET after completing 6-month courses on different skills including; building and construction, electrical works, beauty and salon, tailoring and tie and dye.
