The transformative power of TVET

Education

November 20, 2023 Banadir

Hawa is a young woman who grew up in a small rural community with limited access to educational opportunities in the Middle Shabelle region of Somalia. Despite facing financial constraints and societal expectations, Hawa didn't have access to education and when she came of age, she was married to a man.

Fortunately, Hawa discovered the TVET program supported by CISP's SETS II Project. Encouraged by the practical and skills-based approach of TVET, she enrolled in the course of beauty salon trainees displaying practical henna.

During her time at the institution, she received comprehensive training in various aspects of beauty salons. She learned about displaying henna, and the program provided her with hands-on experience, allowing her to work in a beauty salon and develop practical skills.

“I didn't have access to education. I learned nothing in my childhood due to some circumstances. I married and I have 4 children and then got divorced. I heard this information from a woman in our village. I came and decided to join the beauty salon course. It is a course that I can earn at home or beauty salon for future employment,”

She was not only impressed by the quality of training but also by the supportive learning environment. The instructors were experienced professionals who were passionate about their fields, and they provided personalized guidance and mentorship to the learners. Upon completing her TVET program, Hawa felt confident and equipped with the skills necessary to pursue her dreams and goals of being employed. She can't wait for her graduation day.

The overall objective of SETS II Project funded by EU is to improve the educational attainment and employability of relevant target groups in Somalia and specifically ensure the participation in governance, equality, relevance and inclusiveness of education and training in Somalia are improved.
