Gender-friendly latrines for schools in Galgaduud region

Education

October 07, 2021 Galmudug

CISP successfully constructed gender friendly latrines for an IDP school in Guriel, and also rehabilitated four gender friendly twin-latrines for three schools; in Adado, Abudwak, Xerale and Balanbale districts in Galgaduud region. The rehabilitation project aims at reducing time lost in class as students previously had to leave the school compound to access girl-friendly facilities.

The latrines also have provision for hand washing facilities to improve hygiene in the drought affected schools and reduce girls' absenteeism from school.

“After we've received these latrines, me and my classmates are comfortable staying in school longer. Before these latrines were constructed, we used to walk approximately half a kilometer to our houses to use the toilet. It took me about 30 minutes to walk home and come back and we used to miss a lot of lessons. But now we are very pleased to get these latrines and are very grateful to CISP, ”said Abdinor Abdi, a Grade 6 student at Moalim Ibrahim School in Guriel District.

The infrastructure will also assist in the fight against disease outbreaks such as AWC / cholera which are worsened by drought.

The project is funded by the Somalia Humanitarian Fund and implemented by CISP with the aim of increasing access to safe and protective learning environments for drought affected children and youth in Galgaduud region of Galmudug state, Somalia.
